The park is home to Kenya`s mountain peak -Batian at 5199 meters. It rises dramatically to dominate the surrounding countryside in an ecosystem of 117 square kilometers area and 3,500-meter contour.
High forest-bamboo, alpine moorlands, glaciers, tams, and glacial moraines can all be found here. Huge oddly shaped bushes covered in moss and liche, open moorland with tussock grass studded with many species of giant lobelia and groundsel, which often reach a height of 3-5 metres, are frequently seen. The ground is densely packed with everlasting helichrysums, alchemillas, and gladioli, delphiniums, and'red-hot pokers.
The peaks are the remains of the central core of an ancient volcanic crater, whose rim has long since eroded away to create a complex network of rock faces and ridges that offer a wide variety of climbing routes and require high mountaineering skill and experience by those familiar with rock, ice, and snow technique. Elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard, bongo, bushbuck, duiker, giant forest hog, and numerous kinds of monkeys are among the many game creatures that can be found in the dense, green woods that lie under the moorlands. Although not frequently, lions live in the moorlands, while leopard and wild dog are found in the lower zone.
