Located 320 Km southwest of Nairobi and at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Amboseli is well-known for both its big game and scenic beauty. It has five basic wildlife habitats, which include open plains areas with yellow barbed acacia woodland, rocky, lava stream, thorn bush country swamps and marshes, and some mountain massifs. The snowcapped Kilimanjaro (5895 meters), Africa's highest peak, towers over the region, rising above a saucer of clouds.
Since ancient times, the pastoral and proud Masai people herding their cattle have lived in harmony with the wildlife. The sparkling white snows of Kilimanjaro have been a picturesque backdrop to one of Kenya's most spectacular displays of wildlife - lion, elephant, leopard, cheetah, buffalo - and a slew of simple games, making it a photographer's dream. Swamps and springs fed by underground rivers from the mountain's melting snows provide permanent watering holes for the game, while a dried up lake bed nearby creates a shimmering image in the heat.
